Our Blog A few months of updates listed here. Click here for the Web Log Archive. Monday, May 12, 2008 - Got some letters in the mail today from the US Government. We are now permanent residents of the United States, a status that is good for ten years. Our little laminated visas, that are referred to as green cards, will arrive in a few weeks. Saturday, May 10, 2008 - Visited El Mirage Dry Lake Bed near Victorville. Sunday, April 20, 2008 - Not too much going on. Mark is sick with a cold and has been for days -- we think this is that nasty bug that was going around. Last week we went with friends to the Sci Fi Grand Slam in Burbank which was quite enjoyable. Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - Today Mark's sister Jackie, her husband Mike and their little girl Ashley are coming to visit. Looks to be a lot of fun. Mark is taking some time off while they are here. Monday, February 25, 2008 - Claudette Martin, Janet's good friend from back when she was growing up in Whitehorse, is visiting with us this week which is fun. We went out to Joshua Tree National Park on Saturday, and Janet and Claudette are spending time at Disneyland today. In other news, our jobs are going well and we are both very busy this month. Mark is getting the hang of the diabetes thing and is still reducing his weight - down to 165 now. Sunday, January 20, 2008 - Went to Star Trek: The Tour in Long Beach yesterday. Will have up some pictures shortly. Friday, January 18, 2008 - Some health news for Mark. Two weeks ago today he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It was caught very early (Mark has had regular blood tests) so there appear to be no complications at this point - liver and pancreas functions are fine. He has gone on to some medication, has begun a low fat diet and lost some weight, and is checking his blood sugar now before and after each meal. The diagnosis was a surprise, but Mark is trying to look on the bright side, and he is experiencing some benefits from exercise and a change of diet. So, some lifestyle changes are in place. With any luck, Mark will be able to manage his blood sugar simply with diet and exercise. Saturday, January 12, 2008 - More YouTube - here's a little movie of our little kitten Sasa playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgPWHTQs9LE Saturday, January 12, 2008 - Mark is a week into a new low sugar diet that he is on, and has lost some weight. He's down to 173 pounds as of this morning, his lowest weight since August 1997. Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - Blast from the past. An old Discovery Channel documentary Mark appeared on in 1998 at this YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGdDDrdxGQc Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - Happy New Year! Tuesday, December 25, 2007 - More Christmas in California. Visited with the Willises today. Monday, December 24, 2007 - Mark worked today - but once he was done we went to church, came home, opened gifts and had spareribs. Friday, December 21, 2007 - Shortest day of the year! Mark can help but remember how he felt when he was dealing with Seasonal Disorder on this date each year. Saturday, December 15, 2007 - Went with some friends and saw the Boat Parade at Balboa and walked around and saw the Christmas lights. Friday, December 7, 2007 - Today a new little cat came to live with us - Saša (pronounced Sasha) - a ten and a half week old Russian blue kitten. She is shy, and very quiet - no trouble at all. Daisy and Bella are confused by her (she is very small - especially when compared to Bella) but it seems she will be a great new addition around here. Wednesday, November 28, 2007 - The holiday season has started! Last week was Thanksgiving, which we celebrated with the Willieses in Newport. Shopping has commenced. And this weekend we will be putting up the tree and hanging the lights. Saturday, November 10, 2007 - Well, we have finally gotten a handle on our new schedule. Janet and I both wake up at 5:15 am each weekday now, and head for either work or school depending on what day of the week it is. Janet and I both have our work organized to the point where we spent about 45 hours a week on our jobs, and Janet spends about another 10 hours a week on her schooling, which includes her commute to Pasadena for class twice a week. We have divided up the chores, and have been able to make our weekends largely free of tasks. Saturday is now our Sabbath, the day we rest, and Sundays are also largely freed up now. Our biggest challenges are when Janet is on the pager (which happens every six weeks or so) as she will get paged during that time - and that can happen anytime of the day or night. My own on call duties have changed as well - I now get "system alerts" when I am on call (which happens every four weeks or so) which can happen anytime in the day or night as well and require me to remote in and attend to server issues. So, still challenging to organize, but like I say, we're getting there. - Mark Wednesday, October 31, 2007 - Happy Hallowe'en everyone. I finally put up our 2007 Summer Vacation pictures. Follow this link. Tuesday, October 23, 2007 - Hi everyone. We've been getting a few calls and emails from friends and family just checking to see what's happening with us and the fires currently burning across Southern California. The closest fire to us is the Santiago Canyon fire, and the closest part of its perimeter is about 12 miles northeast of where we live. We are in no danger, and there is no threat of an evacuation for our neighborhood or anything like that. Saturday, October 20, 2007 - Ok, so we are getting back in the groove of things here. Mark celebrated nine years of service at his current employer this last week. Oh, and last weekend we went to a wedding of our friends out in Cherry Valley. Thursday, October 5, 2007 - Well, now that were both working again our life is sure topsy turvy! Will post again when things settle down a wee bit. Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - Janet's first day of work at Project Independence today. It went very well. Thanks for all of your prayers and well wishes. Saturday, September 23, 2007 - As some of you know, Mark was experiencing some numbness in his cheek recently, which we decided it would be could to check out. Good news! - it turns out the numbness was due to neck tension which was pinching a nerve as was unrelated to anything else. We had some initial thoughts of "oh, no - not another acoustic neuroma" but those proved to be unfounded. The MRI came back just fine. Tuesday, September 18, 2007 - Janet has a new job!. Starting next Tuesday she will begin work as an Area Manager with Project Independence here in Orange County. She is excited about taking on some new challenges. Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - Janet's Social Security card came today. She is officially on the grid! Monday, September 3, 2007 - Wow, it's hot here today (Labor Day holiday) - and, we had a long blackout. Friday, August 31, 2007 - Our good friends Janet-Lynn and Stephen have a new baby girl - Cali Lynn Yeomans - born on the 31st. She has a full head of black hair. Congratulations guys! Thursday, August 23, 2007 BIG NEWS - Janet's Employment Authorization card came in the mail today! After 6 years and 9 months she finally is allowed to work in these United States. Tomorrow she will apply for her Social Security Number.
