Summer Vacation 2004
In late June through mid July 2004, Janet and I went on a trip home to Canada to visit with some of our friends and family. It was a really good trip, and for once we even got some rest in between visiting and being tourists.
Over the course of the trip we visited Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon and Salmon Arm in British Columbia and Calgary, Banff and Drumheller in Alberta.
We were in Canada for both a federal election and Canada Day, and even managed to be in Penticton for the Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival and in Alberta for the Calgary Stampede.
And now... the pictures (sorry if this page takes awhile to load!) For a larger version, please click on the photos.
CHAPTER ONE - BRITISH COLUMBIA
The first relative we met was Janet's Uncle Harvey who picked us up at the Kelowna airport. Harvey was down from Whitehorse in the Yukon at a business conference.
Next, it was off to Penticton, to see Mark's parents.
Here's a picture of Mark's Dad, Jack, aboard the S.S. Sicamous, an old paddle-wheeler that is now a museum in Penticton.
While Mark was visiting, the lot next to his parents' house was being cleared. Here's a picture of Mark and his Mom and Dad inspecting the process of felling the trees in the next yard.
Next it was off to Vernon to see the McNeills. Here's a picture of the family below - getting ready for a picture shoot (we had a few of these impromptu photo sessions during the trip). That's Laura on the left holding Gracie - and the boys from left to right are Ethan, Josh and their Dad - Cliff!
Here's Mark and his newest niece playing a little game of "swipe the hat." Gracie sure loves hats. At least - grabbing them. (She doesn't like wearing them so much.)
While we were in Vernon, Janet's good friend Claudette came to visit from Kamloops, and brought along her two kids Lance and Megan. That's Claudette with Janet in the picture below. (Megan and Lance at this point were fully engaged in play with Ethan and Josh).
Here's Leah and Andy outside of Cliff and Laura's home in Vernon. Leah is actually pregnant - Andy just looks it.
The cousin picture! Cheryl, Janet's cousin from Edmonton, happened to be passing through during our visit. That's Andrew on the left, then Cheryl, Cliff and Janet. Such smiley folks.
Next is a picture taken in Salmon Arm of Grandma McNeill and her daughter, Janet's Aunt Sue.
Another Salmon Arm picture, Andy and cousin Brad. This appears to be shortly after a Slurpee run, as Cliff can be seen in the back with a similar beverage.
CHAPTER TWO - ALBERTA
Next it was off to Alberta to see Mark's sister Jackie and her hubby Mike.
While visiting Calgary, Janet, Jackie, and myself visited Heritage Park - an historical theme park based on late 19th century Calgary with all sorts of old buildings and fun things to do. Below is a picture of Jackie, who is a hairdresser, standing outside Heritage Park's antique barber shop.
On the Saturday before we left, Quynn Phillips came in from Edmonton to visit us. This is Janet, Quynn and Mark at the Calgary Stampede grounds.
And finally, a farewell shot of our hosts the Martens - this shot was taken at a ranch west of Calgary at a wedding reception on July 10, the last full day we were visiting Canada. What a photogenic pair!
So, to summarize, the friend and relative count for this trip was roughly 21 or 21 and a half.
1. Uncle Harvey Roske
2&3. Jack Weller and Judy Weller
4&5&6&7&8. Cliff and Laura McNeill and their kids Ethan, Josh and Gracie
9&10&10 and a half. Andrew and Leah McNeill - who are expecting their first child.
11&12&13. Janet's good friend Claudette and her kids Lance and Megan.
14&15 Janet's Aunt Sue and cousin Brad.
16. Janet's cousin Twila
17. Grandma McNeill who was up visiting Sue and Brad.
18. Janet's cousin Cheryl who was driving through Vernon and stopped in.
19&20. Mike and Jackie Martens.
21. Quynn Phillips
And we also met many of Mark's parents' neighbors who were all very nice, and several folks from Cliff and Laura's church, and of course Cheryl's good friend Renee. It was great meeting all of you. : )
